This month marks the 10th birthday of the mp3 player. The MPMan F10 by Saehan Information Systems had 32MB of flash memory, could store up to 8 songs and pretty much sucked.

Inflicted upon the world at CeBIT in March 1998 the MPMan F10 was, for 6 months the only mp3 player in the whole world, making it the iPod of it’s day,

However it was quickly overshadowed by Diamond Multimedia’s Rio PMP300, by virtue of the fact that the Rio wasn’t styled like a set of bathroom scales.

Saehan Information Systems was also one of the first members of Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), a group of like minded industry jackasses who’s goal was to produce the worlds first DRM. And how did that work out? SDMI went under in 2001.

The lesson  is: Industrial design is important, even for ground-breaking technology. And don’t piss off Cory Doctorow or he’ll destroy you. Through time.

product-shredz64

Proving once again all you need is a soldering iron and a dream.; Shredz64 is a Guitar Hero port for the Commodore64, using a PSX64 board to interface the PlayStation GH controller.

.

It allows for imported songs and can detect when the controller is lifted up, to activate ’shred’ mode. Lord.

Winther Mini Rickshaw – £64.99

qm1 Total interactive play, with lots of role-play thrown in for
good measure. Great fun for two children, the passenger sitting in a comfortable seat complete with a safety rail and
foot rest while the other is working hard, pulling. qm2

I love toys. Never grew out of them. And I’m all for getting kids outside where they can get some fresh air and exercise and hit by traffic.
All I’m saying is; if your design for a toy is based around one child subserviently chauffeuring the other and your pitch includes “with lots of roleplaying”, maybe don’t have the little minority girl carting round the aryan ubermench. I’m just saying.

It’s said that a penny saved is a penny earned. Less well known is the fact that saving 1600 pennies earns you a totally sweet-ass FF:Advent Children lighter. It’s just not punchy enough to carry as a proverb and it doesn’t fit in a fortune cookie.

I have to say for unlicensed, unbranded, change-from-a-twenty merchandise, probably made by unskilled child labour.. It’s nice.
Heavy, good click to it. It’s everything you want from 16 bucks.

There was also FF sake glasses. Did someone just say weeaboo?
